Date:
Friday, 16 January, 2015

A day conference in honour of our dear Dr. Raphael Vago was held in the Zeevi Auditorium of Beit Hatfutsot, the Museum of the Jewish People, on Tuesday 6 January 2015.

The conference was organized jointly by the Lester Antin Faculty of Humanities of the Tel Aviv University, together with our Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry. the Goren-Goldstein Center for Diaspora Studies, the Cummings Center for the Study of Russia and Eastern Europe, the Fred Lessing Center for the European History and Beit Hatfutsot.

The event was organized in honour of Dr. Vago in occasion of his retirement.

The above mentioned institutions wished to express their gratitude towards Raphi for his decades-long contribution as a researcher, teacher, historian, counselor, colleague and most of all, "mentch" (human kindness).

In three sessions noted historians and researchers shared with the public the fruits of their own academic work. Many of them were former students of Dr. Vago and expressed their appreciation. The first session was chaired by Dr. Roni Stauber, Director of Antisemitism and Racism at our Center, and the second one by Prof. Dina Porat, Head of the Kantor Center.

During the event the public heard greetings by Prof. Eyal Zisser, Decan of our Faculty; by Prof. Eyal Naveh, Head of the History Department; by Her Excellency the Ambassador of Romania to Israel, Mrs. Andrea Pasternak; by noted guest researchers from the Hungarian National Academy of Science; from the Romanian National Academy of Political Science; and from the Carneghie Mellon University in Pittsburg (USA).

Members of the Hungarian and Romanian communities in Israel were also represented in the audience.

The full sessions can be watched online or downloaded by pressing the following links: first session, second session and third session.

As many speakers at the conference stressed, we are all certain that this occasion only marks a change in formal status, and we will continue to seek Rafi's collaboration for many years to come.
