Opening A Dialogue: Combating Antisemitism Through Legal Means - Vienna, Austria - 23 November 2015

Date:
Monday, 23 November, 2015

The International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists and the Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry conducted a seminar in Vienna focusing on opportunities to combat Antisemitism through legal means. The seminar was opened by Dr. Moshe Kantor, EJC President, Mrs. Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Austrian Federal Minister of Interior, and Dr. Wolfgang Brandstetter, Austrian Federal Minister of Justice. The EJC was represented by Dr. Ariel Muzicant, EJC Vice-President, who co-chaired the seminar and Mr. Oskar Deutsch, President of the Jewish Community of Vienna – the EJC affiliated community in Austria.

Participants learned about the working definition of Antisemitism in the past, present and future and about existing Austrian legal frameworks relevant to Antisemitism. The participants exchanged ideas and solutions thereby discussing best-practices which can be shared and implemented in other European countries.

Dr. Moshe Kantor emphasised that there are three ways to address the problem as a whole, through education, media and legislation.  Even if a  lot  has  been  done  on  legislation  in  Europe  during  the  last  years there is a dramatic increase in Antisemitism.  Austria has been on the forefront of model laws.

Presenters also included Mrs. Irit  Kohn  of  the  International  Association  of  Jewish  Lawyers  and  Jurists,  Prof.  Dina  Porat  -  Head  of  the  Kantor  Center  at  Tel  Aviv  University,  Rabbi  Andrew  Baker  -  AJC  Director  of  International  Jewish  Affairs,  Dr.  Aleksandra  Gliszczyńska-Grabias   -  Assistant  Professor  at  the  Institute  of  Legal  Studies  at  the  Polish  Academy  of  Sciences  and  Advocat  Mrs. Talia  Naamat   of  the  Kantor  Center  at  Tel  Aviv  University.
